Sir Ian McKellen, actor and gay activist, is best known for his roles as the metal-bendng Magneto and as the wizard Gandalf in Lord of the Rings is a much loved British actor who has only relatively recently enjoyed popular success thanks to these Hollywood Blockbusters. He is also a prolific stage actor with a soft-spot Shakespeare, having performed the Bard’s plays for over 30 years worldwide.


McKellen is well known for his activism, regularly speaking at Gay Pride events worldwide, he states his most urgent concern as : “legal and social equality for gay people worldwide.” An aim I’m sure we can all agree with. He is also among the founding members of Stonewall, one the biggest LGBT rights groups.

It has also recently been announced that McKellen will reprise his role as Gandalf in the upcoming film adaption of The Hobbit in 2012.
