2011 was a great year for pop music (Cher Lloyd’s war crime exluced) and it’s that time of year again when every blog and his dog compile their top 10 lists so we here at TQS put two and two together (clever bunch, aren’t we?) and compiled our top 10 pop music hits of 2011:
10. Nero – Promises
From the debut album of English electronic duo Nero, Promises comes in at number 10 despite the video’s annoying narrative introduction.
9. Example – Changed The Way You Kiss Me
2011 has been a great year for Example, releasing 3 singles from his third studio album, Playing in The Shadows. But it was Changed The Way you Kissed Me that secured his place on this list.
8. Will Young – Jealousy
It was great to see Will Young back in the charts this year with his 5th studio album, Echoes, with an updated pop/synthy sound the first single from the album Jealousy comes in at number 8.
7. Lady Gaga – The Edge of Glory
No top ten pop single list would be complete without an entry from the new Queen of Pop but whilst strong, her second studio album Born This Way failed to live up to the hype and that’s why she only makes number 7 with pop ballad, The Edge of Glory.
6. Rihanna & Calvin Harris – We Found Love
Releasing approximately 700 singles, 2011 has certianly been a busy year for Rihanna but it’s her colloboration with Calvin Harris that shone for us.
5. Florence and The Machine – Shake it Out
One of the most anticipated albums of 2011, Florence and The Machine’s Ceremonials is a powerhouse of a record and first release, Shake it Out comes in at number 5.
4. Adele – Somone Like You
Despite being overplayed to the extent that other music almost ceased to exist, it would be impossible not to include Adele’s Someone Like You. Having trancended the charts to become a part of pop culture and the nation’s physche via every emotional montage on TV in 2011 , I doubt we’ll hear any less of it in 2012.
3. Nicki Minaj – Superbass
I’ve choreographed a dance to this. Enough said.
2. Lana Del Ray – Video Games
Lan Del obvious-stage-name Ray is the runner up with her beauitfully crafted Video Games, a true slice of pop brilliance.
1. Nicole Scherzinger – Don’t Hold Your Breath
Former Pussycat Nicole Schwarzenegger gets the crown of 2011 pop with Don’t Hold Your Breath, a song made for dance floors and drunken self-empowerment solos (just me?) alike. As well as the year’s best pop tune Nicole is also one of the most effortlesly charming and genuinely lovely people in the charts, which is more than can be said for Ke$ha. The bitch.
So there we have it, what do you make of our top 10 pop tunes of 2011, missed you favourite? Disgusted that Nicole beat Adele? Let us know in the comments below:
