We usually cover men’s fashion on TQS but when Sarah Cosgrove of Edinburgh designer store & online fashion boutique Arkangel & Felon got in touch to offer her advice on Autumn trends we decided to give the girls get a bit of attention:
This upcoming Autumn/Winter season, the colour popping trend still reigns supreme. But don’t worry if you haven’t got quite got it licked – if those colour choices have you baffled and you’re bamboozled as to how on earth you put the look together without coming over more fashion victim than fashion pro, then don’t worry. Banish thoughts of steely sartorial judgement a la the Devil Wears Prada – fashion is, first and foremost, all in the name of fun, and colour popping is the ultimate opportunity for it!
If you’re new to the colour pop, you don’t have to go the whole hog from the outset. Start small. Make-up is a good place to begin – choose an orange lipstick or a vibrant purple eye colour instead of your usual natural tones and keep the rest of your make up neutral to guarantee a contemporary on-trend look without stepping too far out of your comfort zone.
Next, dip your toe in the water with a few vibrant accessories and you’ll capture the trend beautifully with a single pop of colour, whilst adding some rainbow-inspired interest to your look. Try a fine cotton scarf in luminous coral teamed with jeans and a classic white shirt – coral is flattering to most skin tones and gives an instant burst of feel good factor, perfect for restoring a fading suntan. Or if you feel brave enough for a full-on rainbow, then we love Urban Lab’s 100% silk graffiti print scarf with its street slashes of rainbow colour.
Alternatively, a bright bag can provide a welcome pop of zing to a monochrome or neutral outfit. The iconic satchel is a great place to start, and there’s a fantastic range of colours available. If you’re pining for the long warm days of your summer holidays, a sunflower-yellow satchel is the perfect option, or give a nod to upcoming autumn days with a bag in deep cherry leather. If you can’t decide what colour’s for you, then your perfect colour pop bag has to be Zatchel’s kaleidoscope satchel (above right) with its sweetie-shop patchwork of colour.
Colour pop’s not just for daytime either. Accessorise a simple cocktail dress with a bright clutch bag like Wilbur and Gussie’s embellished magenta number.
When you’re confident with a single stand out colour, then step it up a notch by adding a vibrant and perfectly-styled skyscraper shoe, like the Vivienne Westwood Melissa Skyscrapers in lipstick red or hot pink.
Now you’re getting the hang of it, why not go for the full-on colour block rainbow: a tomato red top, an egg yolk yellow skirt and opaque caterpillar green tights teamed with clementine orange pumps? Carmen Miranda, eat your heart out!
So whether you pop big or pop small, don’t let everyone else have the fashion fun – the world is your rainbow oyster so make sure you give it a try this autumn.
