Latest – Christopher and His Kind will air on Saturday 19 March 9:30pm BBC2 – Here is the Radio Times listing in case you don’t believe me.
I’m very much looking forward to BBC2’s upcoming drama Christopher and His Kind, an adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s autobiography of the same name.
The story begins with Isherwood arriving bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in the swinging cabaret scene of 30s Berlin. Having escaped the repressiveness of Great Britain Isherwood is initially intoxicated by the vibrant gay culture scene. After becoming disillusioned due the failure of a love affair he goes on a journey of self-discovery and sexual liberation. However, with the rising threat of Nazism, Isherwood must confront his hedonistic desires with him and his kind becoming more and more unwelcome in the political climate.
Christopher and His Kind provided the inspiration for the Broadway musical and film adaptation Cabaret and comparisons are already being drawn, with some concluding this adaptation is more of a homage to the Lisa Minnelli film than anything else.
New Doctor Who Matt Smith plays the leading role and is supported by Imogen Poots as an aspiring singer and actress as well as Lindsay Duncan as his overbearing mother.
It hasn’t yet been confirmed when Christopher and His Kind will be broadcast but since it forms part of the BBC’s upcoming ‘inspired by literature’ program, it is likely to be within the next few weeks.
