Our review of gay German coming of age story Summer Storm… Every gay man likes shopping, dancing and being a “gay best friend”. Every gay woman has long hair, wears full make up, and occasionally likes to dabble in heterosexual sex, right?… Howl is an experimental film, dramatising the obscenity trial of Allen Ginsberg’s eponymous celebrated poem through a mixture of film, animation & documentary footage. Sounds a little strange doesn’t it? Well it is, but in a good way…. Next Thursday sees a landmark in Malaysian cinema, Dalam Botol (In a Bottle) will be the country’s first feature film with gay lead characters. Great news you may initially think but the plot makes for grim reading…… Bisexuality on film is an interesting case with a strange myth taking centre-stage in a large proportion bisexual depiction. That of the bisexual being evil, deranged or heartless. In this fortnight’s column I’m going to take a look at some famous examples as well as try and get to the bottom of this bizarre cinematic convention…. I wanted to love this film. Really, I did. Set in New York, twenty-something students, promises of complicated interpersonal dynamics, and a tagline saying ‘a comedy about drama’…. I mentioned Queer as Folk in a previous post about its creator Russel T Davies but I think it’s about time this groundbreaking TV programme got its own post. British LGBT TV history can be talked about in terms of pre/post-Queer as Folk such was its impact on gay programming. It was the first show of its kind, a no-holds barred glimpse into contemporary gay life, with storylines including; being ‘out’ in the workplace, gay parentage and gay sex. Queer as Folk first hit our screens back in 1999 on Channel 4, it follows the lives of three gay men…
