Film Blog | TQS Magazine – Part 7

I like The Muppets. I like movies. I even like (good) marketing but I’m bloody sick of the marketing for The Muppets movie. I’m sick of it purely because there’s too much of it, everytime I turn on the TV, get a bus, go on Twitter or read the news, Kermit or Miss Piggy’s mugs are inevitably plastered all over it. It’s getting to the point where I’m annoyed when I see them, slowly erasing the immense amount of nostalgia I feel for my erstwhile furry friends. Just me? Let me preface this rant by saying I understand that it’s… Directed by the documentarist and animator Jes Benstock, The British Guide to Showing Off is half a biography of the sculptor & artist Andrew Logan and half a documentary on the Alternative Miss World shows he’s been organising in London since 1972. The docu-biopic, for lack of a better word, revolves around the 12th incarnation of the show (the theme of which was ‘Elements’). The events themselves (which Andrew comperes as both host and hostess, ‘split down the middle’) are counter-cultural celebrations of eccentricity and indivuality often with politcal and satirical undertones. The contestants (often in drag) take to the stage… To celebrate the launch of Penguin’s Design Award 2012 tomorrow, designer and friend of TQS Rowan Stocks-Moore has designed 10 alternative book covers & film posters. The Penguin Design Awards give students the chance to win a £1000 prize and a work placement with Penguin Publishing. Here at TQS we love books, but we love films more so whilst all of the below are books they have also all been at some point adapted into a feature film. Enjoy! 1. 2001: A Space Odyssey 2. A tale of two cities 3. American Psycho 4. Birdsong (ok, so this one’s a… This review contains mild spoilers but is unlikely to affect your enjoyment of the film. Before I write this review, I’d like to clarify some things. Firstly, I have a very willing suspension of disbelief. I very rarely remove myself from a film and think “this is utterly ridiculous” because it’s the movies and you just buy into ridiculousness. Secondly, I like films that are a bit sentimental, that pull the heart strings and have a couple of cheesy moments for the sake of a bit of emotion. Also, I really, really like Steven Spielberg. So bearing that in mind,… On the 18th November commercial development Trinity Leeds and Leeds based production company Left Eye Blind teamed up to challenge 150 filmmakers to write, shoot and finish a short film in just under 3 days. 25 films were made as a result and on Thursday night TQS were invited along to the Media Choice Award judging panel, after a 3 hour screening session and much discussion/debate (and even more popcorn) we cast our votes – I won’t be giving anything away here as the winner will be announced at a special screening later in the year, I have however selected… Until a few months ago no one had ever heard of Jean Du Jardin but with the release and incredible success of The Artist the little known french actor has gone from obscurity to Oscar contention. However, if like me you studied French at uni,  it’s not for The Artist you’ll remember him. Based on a hugely popular Quebecois TV series, the French version of Un gars et une filles (A guy and a girl) is commonly used in the classroom as an educational aid for when you know, teachers want to prove how cool they are, innit? Take yourself down… This series has been a journey for sure. The “Previously On…” recap brought up some blasts from the past. A couple of dead probation workers and a crazy brainwashing religious girl; all killed by the Misfits. I was hoping to hear “Save me Barry!” once more but you can’t have everything. We are also reminded of Simon promising Alisha that he will stop becoming Superhoodie and just settle down. If you haven’t watched this episode yet, stop reading and go catch up. Don’t let anyone spoil it for you! Okay, so we start this episode by a psychic telling Simon… From a funny episode last week, to an even funnier one this week. Raising the dead seems like awfully hard work. I can’t imagine Curtis will keep this power for very long. Seth and Curtis open the episode by digging up Seth’s ex girlfriend who died after an overdose. Seth blames himself and obviously wants to make amends. They bring her back to life, Seth dumps Kelly and they try to go back to normal. But something’s not right with her. Curtis also brings a cat back from the dead for an old lady; thinking he’s done something good, he’s… So last night we really did face the music with some pretty dire renditions of Damien Rice’s Cannonball and we have Little Mix as our new champions. However, much more entertaining than the actual show are the Twitterati’s quips, observations and witticisms. Here’s our top 10: 10. Scottish comedian @robertflorence up first with his reason why he just can’t get behind Coldplay:   9. Showbiz journalist @donwooton up next perfectly summing up the unfairness of the X Factor not even mentioning Marcus’ boyfriend of four years choosing instead to feature, amognst others, a girl whose hair he’d once cut:   8…. After a few quieter-than-normal episodes of Misfits we are back with a bang here. Rudy takes centre stage this week and drags Simon along for the ride. The problem? A girl he has a one night stand with gives him with a disease, but we’re not talking your run of mill STI here. She has the power to give diseases out to whoever treats her like dirt. And Rudy did treat her pretty badly. An odd power I agree, but the thing I love about Misfits is that the possibilities are endless. Literally anything could be a power. Rudy is…
