Coronation Street’s William Roache on Sleeping with 1,000 Women: “Well, I’m not denying it.”

Coronation Street actor William Roache has admitted to sleeping with near to 1000 women in an interview for ITV’s Piers Morgan’s Life Stories.

The Press Association reports that the 79-year-old actor, who has been playing Ken Barlow in the soap for over 50 years, admitted to having slept with more than 100 women. When asked if the figure is closer to 1000, he told Morgan “well, I’m not denying it”. His confessions led to his status as one of the most tweeted celebrities of the week.

The interview, which will be aired on ITV1 at 9pm, April 13th, sees Roache discuss a one-night fling with Coronation Street legend, Pat Phoenix – who portrayed Elsie Tanner.  He claims his extra-marital affairs resulted in his divorce in 1974:

“There were plenty of girls around. I shouldn’t have done it. I didn’t have any control over my own sex drive. I didn’t have the strength to control it.”

Truth is stranger (and sluttier) than fiction. Whilst Corrie viewers have watched Ken smarm his way through 28 on-screen girlfriends, Bill Roache has been cutting considerably more notches into his off-screen bedpost. I wonder how this story would have been received if it were Barbara Knox (Corrie’s Rita Sullivan) admitting to 1000 conquests.

Roache became a Twitter sensation this week, but do we consider him a slut or a legend? At risk of sounding like Carrie Bradshaw, I pose the age-old question: how many is too many?  And no- that’s not my paranoia speaking.
